Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
