The Denver Nuggets star earned the league's MVP award in three of the past four years.

Three-time NBA MVP Jokic suffered a "devastating" knee injury as the Nuggets fell 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself towards the end of the second quarter during an unintentional contact with teammate Jones.

His teammate came down on the foot of the big man, and he promptly fell to the ground holding his leg.

The veteran player, who leads the NBA season in boards and assists, posted 21 points and eight dimes in the contest before sustaining the problem.

Jokic is scheduled for an scan on the following day to evaluate the extent of the injury.

"Right away, Jokic knew he was hurt," stated Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Anyone who suffers an injury, that's gut-wrenching, especially somebody as talented as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We will continue as a team. Of course, currently, I'm focused about him personally and the frustration of facing an event of that nature."
