The Three Lions to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they achieve the expected entry for a tournament taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The team are planned to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, should they win Group B, their round of 16 match would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Opening and Demonstration
The championship was launched at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were heckled as they approached the location by approximately 50 protesters, who called for the Israeli team to be expelled from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were displayed with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Schedule
The first match of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will involve the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will cater to families and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through that route.
Locations and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
