The Red Devils Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
