The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
