The Mayor-Elect affirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, was not quick to announce he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform β halting rent increases β to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
