Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
