Pope Cements Position to England's Number Three Role with Bold 90 Against Lions
It is hard to know how relevant of the English team's warm-up match will prove important when their Ashes campaign begins a short distance away at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday β no distance in geography or duration but ages away in significance and environment β but if it achieved solely strengthening Ollie Pope's confidence, that on its own has rendered the exercise worthwhile.
England's number three batsman β that much is surely absolutely clear β followed his first-innings ton by notching another 90 in the follow-up innings, and the truly remarkable was less about the quantity of scored runs but the way in which they were scored. At times the young batsman looked dominant, hitting a twelve fours and a pair of maximums, timing the ball perfectly but with aggressive purpose.
It was just a practice match against a England Lions side that employed a total of 11 pitchers throughout a match held in front of a small group of spectators in a open field, but it was nevertheless extremely praiseworthy. Officially, England, set a target of 202 after the Lions ended their follow-on innings on 251 for six, succeeded by five wickets in hand when Smith hurried the team over the conclusion with a series of fours and sixes.
Crawley and Ben Duckett, the two other big first-innings performers, both failed in the follow-up, while Root added additional runs β 31 on this occasion β but was not significantly more convincing, prior to being confused and duly out by Will Jacks. Harry Brook suffered an same fate shortly after.
Shoaib Bashir β who concluded the fixture having bowled 12 bowling spells for both teams β will have found part of the hitting he confronted quite aggressive. His initial six deliveries against the Lions went for 56, with McKinney feasting to deliveries that if not exactly loose was definitely not very dangerous.
After the sixth of those overs, England's three other pitchers had allowed roughly the same number of runs β 57 β from 15, though Bashir became a little less leaky in time, giving up 27 from his remaining six. He claimed one wicket, taking a clever, low-down catch, diving to his right, to conclude Jacob Bethell's innings for 70, off 80 deliveries.
Bethell, redeeming scoring only three in the initial innings, was one of three players players with fifties in the Lions team's top order. McKinney's scores from opener were steadier than the scores of their number three: he notched 66 in their first innings and went two better in their second innings, facing 61 deliveries over his 50 runs, with five fours and two maximums, each off Bashir's bowling. Jacob Bethell made 68 then a mishit to Ben Stokes at cover, who took a low catch at ankle height.
Jordan Cox exhibited like reliability, and built on his first-innings 53 with an additional 57, at about a run per delivery. There were several outstandingly elegant shots on the way, including a drive down the ground and a hook off consecutive Carse balls to reach his fifty.
After missing the first day of this game with a stomach issue and contributed merely the least significant of efforts to the follow-up, Brydon Carse delivered excellently when eventually provided the chance, with Ben McKinney and Jordan Cox among his three wickets.
