U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was taken into custody in November at an airport in Japan on allegations involving attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, authorities stated.

Details of the Airport Apprehension

Harris, 36, was stopped on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance containing the designer drug MDMA in his personal bag, as stated by a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Regional customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the prosecutor’s office to initiate legal action against the playwright.

Present Situation and Judicial Representation

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris is still being held. The official declined to comment on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.

Presently, it is not known whether the figure has retained legal representation in Japan. Inquiries to his representatives were not immediately returned.
