Playwright Jeremy O Harris Detained in Japan for Suspected Drug Smuggling

U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was taken into custody in November at an airport in Japan on allegations involving attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, authorities stated.

Details of the Airport Apprehension

Harris, 36, was stopped on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance containing the designer drug MDMA in his personal bag, as stated by a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Regional customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the prosecutor’s office to initiate legal action against the playwright.

Present Situation and Judicial Representation

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris is still being held. The official declined to comment on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.

Presently, it is not known whether the figure has retained legal representation in Japan. Inquiries to his representatives were not immediately returned.

Travel Itinerary and Location

Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, having traveled from Britain via a connecting flight in Taiwan. Okinawa is a popular resort destination to the southwest of Tokyo, known for its coastlines and military installations.

  • Penalties are harsh, though not as extreme as in some other Asian nations in which drug offences can result in the death penalty.
  • The country has a long-standing strict enforcement policy towards narcotics crimes.

Notable Precedents

International visitors detained by Japan for alleged drug offences in the past include ex- Australian rugby league player Blake Ferguson in 2021. In a historic 1980 case, ex-Beatles member Paul McCartney was detained after arriving in Tokyo with marijuana and was afterwards barred from the country for a period of time.

Career Highlights

Beyond his stage writing, Jeremy O Harris is recognized for his performance in the series Emily in Paris and for serving as a producer on the HBO drama Euphoria.
