Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
